Christmas in Antwerp!

The Christmas season is enchanting for many, evoking the magic of a fairy tale, while for others, it marks the peak of their busy work schedule. Yet, there’s an undeniable charm that fills the air. Typically, I don’t race to Christmas markets or indulge in too much glühwein, but this year is different. I’m eager to explore the stunning city of Antwerp and immerse myself in the festive spirit that radiates from the heart of Flanders.

This will be an entirely different experience because I just acquired my long-awaited mobile office. The VW California T6.1 has been at the top of my wish list for over 25 years. While the rising price tags in previous years deterred my purchase, today marks a significant milestone! I’m eager to blend my passion for photography with the thrill of testing out this remarkable camper van at a picturesque campsite beside the renowned River Schelde. This adventure is bound to create unforgettable memories.

Here is the first glimpse of my mobile office, poised to embark into the captivating night of Antwerp. Our chosen spot for the evening is City Antwerp Campsite, conveniently located near the city. While the night may be chilly, the diesel heater on board promises to create a warm and cozy atmosphere, ensuring a comfortable experience.

First, I couldn’t miss a visit to my friends at the camera store in Antwerp. For over a decade, I’ve relied on Foto Grobet for all my photographic supplies, and their reputation speaks for itself—they’ve been a staple in the community for more than 100 years! Located just a stone’s throw from the iconic Cathedral of Our Lady, this shop is a treasure for any photography enthusiast. I was there to pick up extra print paper, ensuring that I can deliver images of the highest quality, which is essential for my work.

After leaving Grobet, I noticed the bustling atmosphere of the market square, so I suggested to my wife that we drive to our campsite. After parking, we strolled back to the city center to enjoy the enchanting Christmas spirit. Despite the rainy weather, the campsite was beautifully organized, so we faced no setbacks in our journey. The highlight, however, was taking a boat to reach our destination! With the Christmas lights twinkling in the dark, it turned our trip into a magical adventure.

Stepping onto the boat, we were filled with excitement as we prepared to dive into the bustling city life ahead. As we crossed the Schelde River, we arrived on the mainland, greeted by the stunning sight of “Steentje.”

Het Steen is not just any structure; it is a magnificent medieval fortress nestled in the heart of Antwerp, Belgium—one of Europe’s largest and most vibrant ports. Built between 1200 and 1225, this remarkable fortress served as a grand gateway to a larger castle belonging to the Dukes of Brabant, which sadly fell to ruin in the 19th century. As Antwerp’s oldest building and the first stone fortification of the city, Het Steen embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of the original urban center, making it an unmissable landmark.

Stepping off the boat, I’m feeling great and completely seasick-free! While I might not be a seasoned sea athlete, I can still appreciate the adventure. We’ve entered the lively city of Antwerp, and though it’s bustling, the enchanting lights create a captivating atmosphere. It’s no surprise that the local café is packed with eager patrons ready to soak in the magic!

As you can see in the images, it was bustling with activity! We hiked through crowds everywhere, and I longed to discover a more tranquil spot where I could savor a cozy atmosphere by a warm fire—maybe even enjoy a couple of glasses of fine wine.

Each image was captured using my Leica M10, a remarkable camera that enhances every moment. The stunning images it produces never fail to bring a smile to my face, and I hope they do the same for you. Enjoy the experience!

We found immense joy in being out and meeting fascinating people during our journey in Antwerp. The experience of being together, capturing moments in such an authentic atmosphere, was truly delightful. City life offers a vibrant contrast to the tranquility of the countryside.

Diverse cultures and languages converged, united by a shared purpose: to enjoy each other’s company with the spirit of Christmas in our hearts!

What struck me the most was the palpable love and peace that enveloped us, providing warmth against the cold. Regardless of our backgrounds, this sense of connection made the experience even more special. It truly doesn’t get any better than this!

Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you all!

Thank you
