Getting into the middle ages.

We’ve been to Middelburg several times, and this weekend would be the perfect opportunity to explore the city. Middelburg is a city and municipality in the south-western Netherlands that serves as the seat of the Zeeland province. Midden-Zeeland is located on the center peninsula of the Zeeland province and has a population of around 48,000.

When we arrive in Middeburg, it always reminds me of Brugges. I usually refer to it as the little version of it. Many little residences and authentic small streets bring to life very attractive black and white photographs.

Middelburg was founded in the late eighth or early ninth century. Middelburg was initially mentioned as one of three fortified cities built on Walcheren to protect against Viking assaults. On the site, a monastery was constructed in 844, and it remained an active Catholic foundation until the Reformation. Middelburg’s “stately and attractive” main church’s foundations were erected in the 10th century, with significant work continuing throughout the Middle Ages.

In the city, I always get a sense of the past. It is not very crowded or touristy, so it is enjoyable to explore the small businesses. Almost every day, there is a market, an authentic market that has been around for centuries.
On the other hand, there is a weekly second hand market with authentic books, which my wife and I adore.

Even though we were there in November, the city comes alive in the evening, and we had to seek for more than an hour to locate a spot to dine.
But the one hour we spent looking for meals recreated amazing memories of the night we arrived in Middelburg.

We were set to go to the Dutch beach after spending the night at a really pleasant bed and breakfast. However, they warned us this morning that it would be quite busy since Sint Niklaas would be arriving by boat.
It is the biggest children’s party of the year in the Netherlands.

Middelburg has a magnificent harbor, so we went there first thing in the morning to photograph the light shining on the lovely boats.

When the sun shone brightly on the beautiful sea, which always puts me in a good mood, I received a phone call from my daughter.

It would take us back home without stopping at the Dutch beach. Lucca, our golden boy, had a terrible health problem. It would be a quick conclusion to the weekend, but the most important thing was that we would be with our greatest four-legged friend.

Nothing else mattered at that time!

What happened was described in a previous blog, and it was a devastating loss for us. He will always have a special place in our hearts since he was one of a kind.

We were fortunate to have him for 6,5 years.

Thank you
